After shaping the outside of your egg between centers, you need to turn away the "nubs" at each end. Following is some instructions provided by one of our club members, Ron Eberle. |
I'll try to show the egg chuck here. I'm about as good at email as I am at photography, so we'll see how this
turns out. Here's a shot of the template I use to try for consistency.

For the egg chuck all that's needed is:
§ 2" x 1 ½" PVC reducer § 1 ½" PVC pipe, 2 ½" long §
Good heavy hose clamp
The pipe is 6" in circumference, which makes the 8 holes ¾" apart. I marked a paper strip with the ¾" spacing to transfer the marks to the pipe. It's difficult to see in this photo. The holes
to be drilled are 1 3/8" from the end of the pipe.
Pipe after drilling 7/16" holes.

I made this jig for the bandsawing part:
|
With the pipe mounted like this:
|
So you can bandsaw 2 slots at once
|
Then use a rasp or sandpaper to smooth things out |
The egg blank in the chuck using the tailstock to get things lined up. It's not necessary to use
excessive torque on the clamp to hold the egg blank. Too much will dent the egg.

Ready to finish the end. Clear as mud! |
Here's the finished product displayed at the library in Detroit Lakes

Thanks to Ron Eberle for the photos and text! |
