Wild Turnings

This month's meeting was brought to order by Ryan Hoss on the Main Stage in the Theater at MSUM.  After general business was discussed, the stage was turned over to Paul Hedman for this month's demonstration.

Paul has several methods to do offset turning.

  1. Between centers.  Simple beads and coves are turned.  Next Paul places several marks on the tailstock end of his piece.  This is where he will move the point of the tailstock live center.  Here is the result of this method
  2. Place the workpiece in a chuck.  By starting your turning then loosening the chuck, tipping the piece slightly, and retightening the chuck, you can create offset work.
  3. Here is Pauls Pool Ball chuck.  The pool ball is drilled to accept a tenon turned on a spindle.  Then by adjusting a series of set screws in the outside the wood chuck, he can tighten and loosen and tip the workpiece to do what he wants it to do.

Paul tells us that he is working on a new design chuck, and will keep us updated!

Here's a photo of the members in attendance.
