Sharpening!

The 2008-2009 calendar year for the Minn Dak Woodturners was opened up by our president Ryan Hoss.  General business was discussed, and the opener for the monthly challenge was judged by former president Cliff Storsved.  Cliff picked the best egg, which was made by Ryan Hoss.

Our demonstrator this month was member Phil Holtan.  Phil discussed may aspects of sharpening.  Honing was one topic, here Phil holds one of Alan Lacers diamond stones.  He also brought a recent addition, a jig that allows quick and easy setup for sharpening an Ellsworth type grind on your bowl gouge.  Here is the Ellsworth jig being used in the jig.  Here the side part of the grind is being sharpened, and also the other side.

There are many different angles that can be ground on a bowl gouge, here's a photo showing the angle of the handles with the cutting edges all in the same plane.

Phil has each toolrest on his grinder set to the proper angle for sharpening, here a skew is being sharpened.  Here's a closeup.  Back to the hone, here a scraper is being touched up.

If you are feel good with freehand sharpening, Phil shows us the proper method to do so on a bowl gouge.  Here is a short video clip.

Once the bowl gouges were sharpened, Phil demonstrated their uses:

Notice the fine shavings he is getting from the tool.  Switching to a scraper, Phil tilts it at an angle showing a shear scrape cut.  This same cut can be done with a bowl gouge tipped on it's side.  Here's another view of this cut.  This bowl blank was roughed out prior to tonights demo.  Here the inside is being cleaned up with the bowl gouge.  Another shot. as the inside is nearing completion.

Thanks for the demo Phil!
