Square Bowls

The April 2008 meeting of the MinnDak Woodturners started out with business discussion by Ryan Hoss

Meryl Valness was our member demonstrator this month.  Meryl discovered turning square bowls this past winter.  The blanks he uses were a gift to him from his kids.  Here one of the blanks is chucked up, and Meryl is preparing to cut the outer, top edge with his bowl gouge.  Here's another angle.  Meryl uses a faceplate to mount the workpiece, the screw holes will later be turned away as that area becomes the inside of the bowl.  After the top outer edge of the bowl is completed, his attention turns to the bottom of the bowlMeryl turns outside (bottom) of the bowl section before hollowing the bowl.  You can see the bowl begin to take shape as he finishes up the cuts on the bowl bottom.  After a tenon is formed on the bottom, the workpiece is turned around.  Prior to beginning hollowing, Meryl uses a drill bit with a stop collar to drill to the required depth.  After this depth hole is drilled, the bowl can be hollowed
