Segmented turning

The January 2008 meeting was brought to order by Ryan Hoss.  General business was discussed, and the tools we will be making for toolday were shown, and orders taken.  Challenges this month were discussed by Brian Geffre.

This month's featured demonstrator was Ron Schiffner.  Ron enjoys segmented turning, actually, he enjoys the challenges of building a vessel more than turning it.  Ron brought in many examples of his work for us to see.  Here he discusses the importance of proper fitting of the segments as they come together in a ring.  Any gaps, no matter how small, will show up in the finished piece.  He passed an example around the room, here is Bernie Altenburg inspecting the segment.  Ron also talked about centering workpieces as you glue them together.  For a piece like he is holding, centering is critical, otherwise the "dots" formed in your turning will not be of equal size.  Ron uses a miter gauge, his bandsaw, and a sanding station to fit his segments together.

For finishing, Ron uses this product

Here are two photos of the show and tell table for January.
