The topic for this month's meeting was threading a lidded box. Ron Williams brought his Klein jig in for the demo. Ron began his demo with some discussion on the wall thickness and where the threads should be. The actual turning begins with hollowing out the base to the correct wall thickness. The thread cutter is then installed in the headstock, and the base (along with the chuck) is mounted to the Klein jig at the tailstock end of the lathe. The crossfeed on the jig is adjusted so that the correct engagement of cutter to box is made. Here the cutting has begun. Since this was such small work, it was easier to watch the action from the camera displayed on our TV. After the base is completed, shaping of the lid begins. Once again, the dimensions are discussed. Cutting on the lid begins. Here's a closeup of the cutter being adjusted for proper thread depth. To make sure that the threads are strong even when softer woods are used, at little CA glue (superglue) and accelerator are used. Now the moment of truth... Will they fit? Yes, they do! Here's a closeup of the completed threads on both the lid and base. Thanks Ron, for this interesting demonstration! |
