Basics of stool turning

Ron Williams started the meeting with some announcments.  He discussed the updated bylaws for the club.  These include "job descriptions" for the various officer positions.  We are looking for members to take over some of the responsibilities of club officers.  Elections for officers will take place at the May 2007 meeting.

Ron began the demo this month with a powerpoint presentation on determining the correct angles for drilling in the seat and legs of the stool.  After this discussion, a sample workpiece was placed between centers and trued up.  Once the leg is round, a template is brought up to the workpiece and the critical lines are drawn onto the wood.  A calipers (held in Ron's left hand) is set to the correct diameter, and a parting tool is then used to bring the workpiece to the correct diameter at that location.  One tip that Ron gave us was to start with your largest diameters first and work down to the smaller ones.  Here is a photo of what the finished leg will look like.  Here Ron uses a skew to clean up the edges of some of the wood where the parting tool was used.  A series of beads and coves is turned and the workpiece is nearly finished.

Many items were brought to this month's show and tell.

Here's Ron's PowerPoint presentation from the meeting.

Ron also created this slick Shockwave animation for those of you who were unable to be there for his demo! (Shockwave or Flash plug-in needed to view).

A special thanks to Ron Williams for this months demo, and to everyone who brought items in to share!
