Club member Dave Olig performed out pen turning demonstration. He started out by talking about the different methods for preparing your pen blanks. You can use a centering vice to drill, or order pre-drilled blanks. Once the pen blank is drilled, it is installed onto a mandrel. Here is a photo of the mandrel with the blanks installed on the lathe. Dave starts the turning with a small spindle gouge. Here is the blank with one side rough turned. Dave uses a skew to trim to final thickness. Turn your workpiece all the way down to the mandrell ends. Once you have the piece near your thickness, you can begin sanding. After sanding is completed, Dave applies the finish with the workpiece still on the mandrel, and still on the lathe. After the finish is buffed, he applies carnuba wax with the lathe on. This gives a nice shine to the wood. You can see how making pens has hollowed a nice groove in his bar of wax. Assembly of the pens can be done in an inexpensive arbor press. Be sure to follow the directions that came with your pen kit, if you assemble something in the wrong order, you may need
to improvise to get your pen assembled! Here's another photo of the press being used to assemble the pen. |
