November 2005

Our November meeting started out with some business.  Vern Nolting and Ron Williams discussed the tree we are sponsoring at the Meritcare Festival of Wreaths.  The tree was decorated on Nov 15th.

Tom Larson is our guest demonstrator this month.  Tom demonstrated turning square bowls.  Here he is mounting a blank on the lathe.

Tom begins turning the foot of the bowl. From there, he starts on the wings of the bowl, working towards the corners of the square blank.  Once the bottom side of the bowl is completed, sand the bottom while before turning it around.  Here Ron mans a vacuum to keep dust to a minimum. Phil Holtan provides some assistance.  Here Tom begins hollowing the bowl

If you have a high speed connection, here is a video where you can see the turning being done on the square "wings" of the bowl.

Note that Tom always wears a face shield / respirator while turning.  Tom related several close calls that he had during his years of turning, and the face shield saved him from being injured.  Here are a couple of photos of the square bowl Tom turned:  bottom and top.  Note the rings he turns in the bottom.

Surrounding the table is some of Tom's recent work.  He turns some incredible large burl platters!  view1 and view2.  Here is a closeup of a square bowl he brought.
