April 2004
On April 8th, 2004, Ron Williams demonstrated turning lidded boxes. Ron has turned lots of boxes over the years, and has even had his work featured in the Fargo Forum.
Here Ron is planning the general shape his box will take. He starts out with a blank between centers and trues it up. After turning a tenon on both ends, he places it in his chuck, and using a narrow parting tool, separates the lid from the box. Taking the section for the lid, he starts hollowing the inside. Once that's completed, he'll sand the inside.
Once the inside of the lid is completed, the same process is used on the box. Hollow the inside partially, then fit the lid to the box. Once you have a good fit, finish hollowing the box and sand the
inside.
When the inside of the box is completed, place the lid back in the chuck. Rough shape as much as possible before placing the box back onto the chuck. Place the lide back onto the box. A snug friction fit is good, if the fit is loose, place a few sheets of tissues between the top and bottom. Turn the lid to its final shape. After the lid is completed, turn the box to it's final shape.
The club has placed orders for 4 mini lathes.
We will be needing to make 4 stands for them, and Ron brought in the folding stand that he uses. Here are some photos of it, photo 01 and photo 02.
