March 2004

We had some tools remaining after our toolmaking day, and here is a shot of just a portion of the beading and parting tools, the round skew, and also a pyramid point tool (recently featured in Wood Magazine) that we made.  All of the cutting bits were made of 8 or 10% cobalt steel, and we shaped the cutting ends and placed them in a wooden handle.  All of these tools (plus more!) were sold (almost 100 tools with wooden handles)!

In our March 2004 meeting, Cliff Storsved turned a trivet, this project was featured in a recent issue of Wood Magazine.  It involved using a jig to do offset turning.  Here's Cliff after completing the first of three offset rings.

He starts out by using the tailstock to make a mark at the center of the offset ring.  After finding the center, he uses a pencil and his turning tools to layout the rings he will turn, one at a time.  Here he's turning the 3rd ring on the trivet  After completing the third ring on the trivet, he flips the workpiece around, and centers it.  Then the final rings on the backside of the trivet get turned.

At our April meeting, (April  8), several of you were inquiring about what magazine the plans could be found: This can be found on Page # 70, of the March 2004 issue of the WOOD Magazine, along with the pattern in the center fold out section.

There were a couple of items brought to the show and tell that I didn't get the creators names.  If any of these turnings are yours, let me know so I can give you credit for them!
