November 2003

Phil Holtan will be demonstrating at Acme Electric, Tool Crib of the North in Fargo ND on November 21, 22, and 23.  It's a club approved event, so be sure to stop in and say Hi!

Our November meeting got off to a great start.  Phil Holtan turned a natural edged bowl.  Here he is with the bowl being roughed out between centers.  It's best to start turning this way so that you can reposition the wood as you see what the grain looks like inside.  Here is a shot of the TV we use.  This allows everyone to see a closeup of the work being done.  Here you can see Phil's grip on his bowl gouge as he shapes the outside of the blank.  Another shot.  Phil is inspecting the finish of the outside of the bowl before he repositions it for hollowing out the inside.

As he hollows out the inside, chips are flying everywhere!  Howard Rassmusson was in need of a bit of fiber...  Phil's bowl gouge.  Phil discusses the size of the shavings# as he stops the lathe.  Even though he is using a chuck, he leaves a support for the tailstock on the interior of the bowl for as long as possible before turning it away.

We had just under 50 people in attendance, this has to be one of our best turnouts ever!

I'm sure everyone agrees:
Thanks, Phil, for giving us a great show!

Show and tell...

Dale Cook turned a nice lidded vessel from an oak burl.

Roger Johnson bought a kit from Penn State Industries and turned this watch from cocobolo.

Knute took up Vern Nolting's challenge from the October meeting and made an "inversion top".  He "one-upped" Vern by making a top launcher.  It took several tries, but he did manage to show us that it works!

I can't remember who's stuff this is, but there is a very nice segmented bowl, a small vessel, and another segmented vessel.
