Well, our toolmaking day 2003 was a success! We met at 8:00 AM at Minnesota State University Moorhead's machine shop in the Technology Department on February 22nd, 2003
We made following items:
We made 11 tool rests 8 sharpening jigs and 7 extra bases 15 laser pointer wall thickness gauges 14 D-handle and traps 18 handles (3/4" D) 6 pistol grip handles
27 3/4" OD hollowing tools 25 3/8" OD cutter holders for the pistol grip tools 1 Texas toothpick (no wait, make that an Alaska Toothpick!) for Bob Carls
We started out the day with getting things
rolling, namely getting a drill bit stuck while boring out a piece of steel on the metal lathe! Here is Dave Gausman, Dale Anderson, and Jim McTavish
(me) at the lathe. Here is Dave Glatt and I trying to get the drillbit out of the steel.
We finally got the boring at the metal lathe going, here are a couple of photos of Dave Gausman at the lathe. photo 01 & photo 02.
Here is William Olson and Cliff Storsved drilling the ends of some boring bars for cutting bits.
We made some laser pointer wall thickness gauges, and here is Dave Nobis
cutting some PVC pipe to length for these tools. And Dale Anderson
tapping the pvc for setscrews.
Donnell Dunn
was one of our welders this year.
A special thanks goes to Ron Williams
for getting us the MSUM facilities to use for Toolday.
Here is Adam Olson
de-burring the ends of some of the steel stock.
William Olson
took to making the special Texas toothpick for Bob Carls. This thing was made of 1 1/8" square cold rolled steel that was 48" long. Bob's arms are going to look like Arnold Shwartzenegger's after hefting this thing all day!
Here is the busiest crew of the day... The guys on the hydraulic bender!

We'd like to thank
everyone for their help with making Tooday 2003 a success! We had a great turnout, and hope next year goes even better! Ron Williams and Jim McTavish |
