Laying out Logs

The first meeting of our second year was on September 12, 2002.  This meeting addressed preping your rough wood for turning on the lathe.

Phil brought in a black ash burl that he had recently acquired.

He described to club members what to look for in a burl, and to plan out what you would like to get from certain areas.  He uses cardboard circles and an awl to lay the log out for cutting.

Here is Phil making the first cut with his chainsaw.  After the first cut was completed, he pointed out the grain in the freshly cut turning blank.  Here he is finishing up the cut.

Phil finished his demonstration, and club president Ron Williams led the remainder of the meeging.

Here Phil is discussing a bowl he turned from the other half of the log that is behind him.  Notice the grain orientation from this piece of crotch wood.  Here is another photo.

Here Phil is showing a cottonwood slab that he will turn into a platter.

Ron proposed that everyone bring a turned goblet in for the next meeting.  Here he is discussing turning methods using a chuck.

Here are some photos of show and tell items that were brought in.
